At Horowhenua District Council Community Wellbeing is at the heart of what we do.

Feeling connected to your community has a positive effect on mental health and emotional wellbeing. It gives a sense of belonging and social connectedness, offering extra meaning and purpose to everyday life.

The Community Wellbeing Strategy has been refreshed to take us through to 2027 and was adopted by Council on 12 June 2024.

Through the Community Wellbeing Strategy 2024-27 we’re setting out how we'll build stronger communities in the next few years.

Our priority areas

Our priority areas for Community Wellbeing are:

  • Culture
  • Connected Community
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Sense of place and belonging
  • Housing
  • Environment, Community Resilience and Preparedness
  • Community Safety.

We also heard from our community that these areas are also top of mind and have been woven into the Community Wellbeing Strategy as our secondary areas of focus:

  • Communication and connectivity – ensuring that we’re connecting with our community in a way that's accessible and mana enhancing.
  • Partnership between community agencies – better collective partnership between our community agencies and services.
  • Community-led development and engagement – strengthening the work we do by empowering our community to deliver.
  • Access to kai through community-led initiatives.

Everyone plays a role in community wellbeing and that’s why this strategy requires a collective effort to make a difference for our community, our people.

Community Wellbeing Vision

Horowhenua is a safe, vibrant, inclusive and connected community.  We unite people, partnerships, and place, leveraging our collective experience and skills to foster unity and enhance the wellbeing of our entire community.

Community Wellbeing Action Plan

The Community Wellbeing Action Plan outlines our specific actions and initiatives to bring our shared vision to life.  Every function within our Council has a role to play in championing community wellbeing.

We're committed to monitoring and reporting our progress against the Community Wellbeing Strategy and Action Plan, ensuring transparency and accountability in our efforts.  Check out the Action Plan from page 19 of the Community Wellbeing Strategy.
